The beach itself

Surf beach. Sand bottom. Real waves.

South-facing, generally clean, breaks well across the tide. Beginners stay inside the southern bommie, more experienced surfers work the sand-bottom point on a south-west swell. Surf-rescue patrolled in summer; otherwise unpatrolled — read the conditions.

Bring wax, leashes, and stickers. Forgot any of them? We've got you covered at the counter.

Worth the drive

While you're down here.

A handful of south-coast neighbours within a short drive of the kiosk. Pack a sausage roll, take your time.

5 min east

Berrys Beach

Quieter cove, dog-friendly outside school holidays, good for a long walk and a swim.

10 min south-east

Pyramid Rock

Granite stack, lookout, dramatic cliff drops. The south-coast classic photo stop.

15 min east

Cape Woolamai

Bigger surf, the longest beach on the island, gannet colony out at the headland.

20 min west

The Nobbies

Boardwalks at the island's western tip. Seal Rocks offshore, blowhole on a big swell.

Penguins, koalas, MotoGP, ferries, the wharf at San Remo — there's plenty more if you've got the day.
